Day 72 - Called by God: The Journey from Desperation to Destiny

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Welcome to Day 72 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are beginning the book of 1 Samuel. The opening chapters of 1 Samuel set the stage for a powerful transition in Israel’s history. They introduce us to Hannah, a woman of deep faith who prays fervently for a child. God answers her prayers, and she dedicates her son, Samuel, to serve in the house of the Lord. As Samuel grows, we see the contrast between his faithful service and the corruption of Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas. God warns Eli of impending judgment, and in chapter 3, Samuel experiences his first divine encounter, where he learns to recognize and respond to God’s voice. These chapters highlight God’s sovereignty, His faithfulness in answering prayers, and His desire to raise up leaders who will listen to Him.

1 Samuel Chapter 1: This chapter introduces Hannah, a woman deeply grieved by her barrenness. In her desperation, she prays to God, vowing that if He gives her a son, she will dedicate him to the Lord’s service. Eli, the priest, initially mistakes her silent prayer for drunkenness but later blesses her. God hears Hannah’s plea, and she gives birth to Samuel, whose name means "God has heard." True to her vow, she brings Samuel to the tabernacle at Shiloh and entrusts him to the Lord’s work. This chapter emphasizes the power of persistent prayer and the faithfulness of God in responding to His people’s cries.

1 Samuel Chapter 2: This chapter opens with Hannah’s beautiful song of praise, celebrating God’s power and justice. Meanwhile, the corruption of Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, becomes evident—they abuse their priestly roles and dishonor God. A prophet warns Eli that his family’s disobedience will lead to judgment, as God will raise up a faithful servant instead. Meanwhile, Samuel grows in the presence of the Lord, gaining favor with both God and people. This chapter contrasts the humility of Hannah’s faith with the arrogance of Eli’s sons, showcasing God's commitment to righteousness and His plan to raise up a new spiritual leader.

1 Samuel Chapter 3: In this pivotal chapter, Samuel receives his first prophetic call from God. One night, as he lies in the temple, he hears a voice calling his name. Initially, he mistakes it for Eli, but after the third call, Eli realizes it is God speaking. Samuel responds with humility: “Speak, for Your servant hears.” God reveals to Samuel that He will bring judgment upon Eli’s house due to their unrepentant sin. The next morning, Samuel courageously delivers this message to Eli, marking the beginning of his prophetic ministry. This chapter highlights the importance of listening to God and stepping into one’s divine calling with obedience.
