Day 40 - Faith vs. Fear: Trusting God When the Journey Gets Tough

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Welcome to Day 40 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are continuing the book of Numbers. In Chapters 11-13, the Israelites, growing restless in the wilderness, begin to complain about their lack of food, longing for the days in Egypt, leading to a moment where God sends a massive flock of quail to satiate their hunger, but their greed results in punishment; subsequently, Moses' sister Miriam and brother Aaron criticize his leadership, causing Miriam to be struck with leprosy as a result of their rebellion; finally, Moses sends 12 spies to scout the Promised Land, where ten of them return with a fearful report about the inhabitants' strength, while only Caleb and Joshua express confidence in God's ability to conquer the land, setting the stage for the people's future disobedience and wandering in the wilderness.

Numbers Chapter 11 the Israelites begin complaining about their monotonous diet of manna, longing for the meat they had in Egypt, which provokes God's anger and results in a fire consuming parts of the camp; Moses intercedes on their behalf, calming the fire. Feeling overwhelmed by the people's burdens, Moses cries out to God, who instructs him to choose 70 elders to share the leadership responsibility and give them a portion of his spirit. As a consequence of the people's continued complaining, God sends a large flock of quails, but their greed leads to a plague, marking the location as "Kibroth-hattaavah" (the graves of craving).

Numbers Chapter 12 Moses' sister Miriam and brother Aaron criticize Moses for marrying a Cushite woman, essentially questioning his leadership and authority due to her ethnicity; this act of jealousy and pride leads to God striking Miriam with leprosy as a consequence for speaking against His chosen leader. Despite being wronged, Moses humbly intercedes for Miriam, demonstrating his character and compassion, and she is eventually restored after a period of isolation, serving as a powerful reminder of the dangers of envy and the importance of respecting God's chosen leaders.

Numbers Chapter 13 God instructs Moses to send twelve spies, one from each Israelite tribe, to scout out the land of Canaan, which he has promised to them; their mission is to assess the land's fertility, the strength of its inhabitants, and bring back samples of its produce to report back to the community. While exploring, the spies encounter large, formidable people, particularly the "Anakim," which instills fear in most of them, leading to a negative report upon their return, discouraging the Israelites from entering Canaan. However, two spies, Caleb and Joshua, remain optimistic, emphasizing the land's richness and expressing confidence in God's ability to help them conquer it. This chapter serves as a pivotal moment, highlighting the importance of faith and trust in God's promises, as the Israelites' lack of belief in the face of perceived challenges leads to doubt and rebellion against God's plan.
