Welcome to Day 42 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are continuing the book of Numbers. In Chapters 17-20, the Israelites continue to rebel against Moses and Aaron, leading to a test where each tribal leader is instructed to bring their staff to the tabernacle, and only Aaron's staff miraculously buds and blossoms, solidifying his position as God's chosen high priest; this event serves as a clear sign to the people to stop questioning their leadership. Later, while nearing the Promised Land, the Israelites face a lack of water and angrily accuse Moses and Aaron of failing them, causing Moses to strike a rock with his staff to produce water, an act of disobedience that results in God's decision to prevent Moses from entering the Promised Land. The chapter concludes with the death of Aaron on Mount Hor, marking the end of his priestly role.
Numbers Chapter 17 following the rebellion of Korah against Moses and Aaron's leadership, God instructs Moses to take a staff from each tribal leader and place them in the tabernacle overnight; the staff that miraculously buds and blossoms will signify God's chosen high priest. When only Aaron's staff sprouts, it serves as a clear and undeniable sign that God has chosen him and the Levitical priesthood, effectively silencing any further questions about their authority. This event solidifies Aaron's position as the high priest and reaffirms God's selection of the Levitical tribe for priestly duties.
Numbers Chapter 18 primarily focuses on outlining the specific duties and responsibilities assigned to Aaron and his sons as priests, detailing their role in maintaining the holiness of the tabernacle and performing required rituals, including receiving designated offerings from the Israelites like the wave offering and the heave offering; it emphasizes the sacred nature of their position as mediators between God and the people, while also clarifying that the Levites would assist them in their tasks and be provided with a portion of the offerings as their sustenance.
Numbers Chapter 19 details the ritualistic process of preparing "the water of purification" using the ashes of a completely red heifer, which was to be used to cleanse individuals who became ceremonially unclean by touching a dead body; this complex procedure involved burning the heifer outside the camp, mixing its ashes with water, and sprinkling the mixture on the unclean person, emphasizing the concept of purity and separation from defilement within the Israelite community, serving as a type of cleansing ritual for the people throughout their time in the wilderness.
Numbers Chapter 20 the Israelites, while camped at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, face a water shortage, leading to complaints against Moses and Aaron; God instructs Moses to speak to a rock to bring forth water, but Moses, in anger, strikes the rock instead, causing God to rebuke him and declare that he will not enter the Promised Land due to his lack of faith; this event, called "Meribah" (meaning "quarrel"), also marks the death of Miriam, Moses' sister, and foreshadows Moses' own exclusion from Canaan, highlighting the consequences of disobedience even for leaders.
