Welcome to Day 21 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and the book of Exodus. In Chapters 17-20, the Israelites journey through the wilderness, encountering a critical lack of water at Rephidim where they complain to Moses, leading him to strike a rock with his staff to produce a miraculous spring, a moment called "Massah and Meribah" due to their testing of God; they then face a battle against the Amalekites, where Moses' raised hands are key to their victory; finally, at Mount Sinai, God reveals the Ten Commandments to Moses, establishing a covenant with the Israelites and outlining the laws they must follow.
Exodus 17: Narrates the Israelites' journey through the wilderness where they face two major challenges: a desperate need for water, which God miraculously provides by instructing Moses to strike a rock at Horeb, and a battle against the Amalekites, where Israel's victory is contingent on Moses continuously holding up his hands in prayer, signifying that their success depended entirely on God's intervention and leadership through Moses; this event is commemorated by building an altar named "The Lord is my banner.".
Exodus 18: Recounts the story of Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, visiting him in the wilderness after the Israelites' exodus from Egypt, where Jethro learns about God's mighty deeds and praises Him with sacrifices; observing Moses' overwhelming workload of judging the people, Jethro advises him to delegate authority by appointing capable leaders over smaller groups, allowing Moses to focus on major issues, which Moses readily accepts and implements, demonstrating the value of wise counsel even from unexpected sources.
Exodus 19: Details the moment when the Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai, where God reveals his plan to establish a covenant with them, promising to make them a "treasured possession" if they obey his commands; Moses conveys this message to the people who readily agree, and God instructs them to prepare themselves for a powerful encounter on the mountain, warning that anyone who touches it will be punished, culminating in a dramatic display of thunder, lightning, and a thick cloud covering the summit as God descends to speak with Moses directly.
Exodus 20: Often referred to as "The Ten Commandments," is a pivotal moment in the Bible where God directly communicates his law to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, establishing a covenant between them by outlining a set of moral principles to guide their lives; it begins by reminding them of their deliverance from Egypt, followed by commandments focusing on their relationship with God (no other gods, not making idols, honoring the Sabbath) and then interpersonal relationships (not murdering, committing adultery, stealing, bearing false witness, and not coveting) - essentially defining the foundation of their ethical conduct as a community.
