Day 33 - Living Set Apart: A Call to Holiness, Atonement, and Purity

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Welcome to Day 33 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are starting the book of Leviticus. In Chapters 16-18, detail the ritual of the Day of Atonement, where the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for the sins of the Israelites using a sacrificial bull and two goats, one for the Lord and the other, a scapegoat, to be sent into the wilderness carrying the people's sins; following this, chapters 17-18 focus heavily on laws regarding sexual purity, outlining prohibited relationships and acts as a way to maintain moral cleanliness before God, emphasizing the importance of not following the practices of the Canaanites who inhabited the promised land.

Leviticus 16 details the ritual of the Day of Atonement, a solemn annual ceremony where the High Priest would enter the Most Holy Place to make atonement for the sins of the Israelites and the priests, using a special offering of a bull for the priests and two goats for the people; one goat was sacrificed as a sin offering, while the other, symbolically carrying the people's sins, was sent into the wilderness, representing the removal of their transgressions; this chapter emphasizes the importance of purity and the seriousness of approaching God's presence, referencing the deaths of Nadab and Abihu as a warning against improper ritual practices.

Leviticus 17 focuses heavily on the sanctity of blood, strictly forbidding Israelites from consuming blood and dictating that all animal sacrifices must be brought to the tabernacle and offered only by the priests, emphasizing that the life of a creature resides in its blood and therefore should be treated with reverence; this includes not only sacrificial animals but also any hunted game, where the blood must be drained and covered with earth, further highlighting the importance of offering all worship solely to God at the designated place and not to any other deities through unauthorized sacrifices.

Leviticus 18 primarily focuses on a detailed list of sexual prohibitions, outlining what is considered incestuous and morally wrong within the Israelite community, including restrictions against relations with close family members like a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and even a wife's sister; it also forbids adultery, sexual relations during menstruation, and any form of bestiality, emphasizing the importance of maintaining purity and holiness through adherence to these strict sexual boundaries as part of God's covenant with the Israelites.
