Day 58 - Stepping Into Promise: Faith, Courage, and Miracles at the Jordan

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Welcome to Day 58 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are beginning the book of Joshua. In Chapters 1-4, God appoints Joshua as the new leader of Israel after Moses' death, instructing him to lead the people across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land of Canaan, emphasizing the need for courage and obedience to God's commands; Joshua sends spies to scout the land, including Rahab of Jericho who pledges allegiance to Israel; the Israelites then miraculously cross the Jordan River with the Ark of the Covenant, signifying God's presence and power, and are instructed to collect stones from the riverbed as a reminder of their miraculous entry into the Promised Land.

Joshua Chapter 1 is following Moses' death, God appoints Joshua as the new leader of Israel, instructing him to lead the people across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land. God emphasizes the need for Joshua to be "strong and courageous," reminding him that He will be with him throughout the conquest, and urging him to diligently study and follow the Law of Moses. This chapter marks a critical transition in leadership, setting the stage for Israel's entry into Canaan and the subsequent conquest of the land.

Joshua Chapter 2 is when Joshua sends two spies to scout out the city of Jericho, where they encounter Rahab, a prostitute, who secretly shelters them from the king of Jericho in exchange for a promise to protect her and her family during the upcoming Israelite invasion; this pivotal moment showcases Rahab's faith in the God of Israel, setting the stage for the conquest of Jericho and highlighting themes of redemption and divine providence through an unlikely character like Rahab.

Joshua Chapter 3 describes the Israelites, led by Joshua, prepare to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land, a significant moment signifying their entry into their new territory; the key event is the miraculous parting of the Jordan River's waters, where the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant step into the river, causing the water upstream to pile up, creating a dry path for the entire nation to cross on dry ground, demonstrating God's power and presence as they enter their inheritance; this act serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness and the people's dependence on him to overcome obstacles ahead.

Joshua Chapter 4 details after the Israelites miraculously cross the Jordan River, God instructs Joshua to have 12 men, one from each tribe, retrieve stones from the riverbed where the priests stood with the Ark of the Covenant, and carry them to their campsite as a lasting memorial of God's power; these stones are meant to serve as a reminder to future generations of how God parted the waters of the Jordan, allowing the Israelites to enter the Promised Land; additionally, Joshua sets up another set of 12 stones within the Jordan itself, further emphasizing the significance of this event and solidifying God's presence with his people.
