Day 60 - Unstoppable Faith: Victory, Miracles, and the Power of God's Timing

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

Welcome to Day 60 of The Glory Team Bible Reading plan and we are beginning the book of Joshua. In Chapters 8-10, following the initial failed attempt to conquer Ai due to the sin of Achan, Joshua receives detailed instructions from God to strategically attack the city with an ambush, leading to a decisive Israelite victory where the city is burned and its inhabitants slain; this is followed by a large-scale battle against a coalition of Canaanite kings led by the king of Jerusalem, where Joshua famously prays for the sun and moon to stand still in the sky, allowing the Israelites to completely defeat their enemies and secure more territory in the Promised Land.

In Joshua Chapter 8 after the Israelites suffered a setback due to Achan's sin, God encourages Joshua to attack the city of Ai, providing him with a strategy to set an ambush on the west side of the city. Following God's instructions, Joshua sends a small force to lure the enemy out, while the main army hides in wait. When the men of Ai pursue the Israelites, the ambushers attack and capture the city, destroying it and killing all its inhabitants, including the king, who is hanged on a tree. The chapter concludes with the Israelites performing a ritual at Mount Ebal and Gerizim, where they read the blessings and curses of the Law, signifying their commitment to God's commands.

In Joshua Chapter 9 the inhabitants of Gibeon, a Canaanite city near the Israelites, cleverly deceive Joshua and the Israelites by pretending to be from a faraway land, using old clothes and worn-out provisions to appear like they had traveled a long distance; this tactic convinces the Israelites to make a peace treaty with them without consulting God first. When the deception is later discovered, the Israelites are bound by the treaty and cannot kill the Gibeonites, instead assigning them to be servants, "hewers of wood and drawers of water" for the Israelite community. This chapter highlights the importance of seeking God's guidance before making important decisions, as the Israelites suffered consequences for relying solely on appearances without seeking divine direction.

In Joshua Chapter 10 the Israelites' decisive victory against a coalition of southern Canaanite kings, led by Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem, who had united to fight against the Gibeonites, who had previously made a peace treaty with Israel; the highlight of this chapter is the miraculous "standing still" of the sun and moon, allowing the Israelites to extend their battle day and achieve a complete rout of their enemies, demonstrating God's powerful intervention on behalf of Joshua and his people; this event is seen as a significant display of divine power and serves as a key moment in the conquest of Canaan.
